This is an email that I received…
i’ve been a fan of this site ever since it started and love it!
i wanted to ask you for your help since i have a feeling you might have the answer. here’s the situation, i’m a nyc native, but ended up moving to o.c. last year because i married. kind of similar to your situation, but reverse. well, all this time i’ve never had to cook for my inlaws. since they’ve never been to our apt, i wanted them to come over to check it out and then head to south coast plaza for lunch but my MIL asked that i cook korean! i have some experience, including trying out some of your easier recipes. but other than that, i’ve never cooked a whole meal with banchan.
do you think you could give me help with the menu? also, this could double as an idea for your next koreancooking update (maybe?). ”cooking your first meal for the inlaws” =)
anyway, hope to hear from you, thanks so much,
My response…
Samgyetang is really easy and they sell kits with all the materials at the korean market. All you need to buy is the cornish game hens and then serve with some kimchi. Served in a large bowl, the entire hen can make a very nice presentation. A lot of people have told me they tried the dakdoritang recipe on the site and said that it turned out great. It’s really hard to mess up and is a whole dish complete with veggies and meat. All you need is rice and kimchi to complement.
If you want to do a gook, I’d say miyuk gook is about the easiest thing to make. You could serve that with rice, banchan, and also fry some fish. Koreans love jogee (yellow croaker), godeunguh (mackeral), eemyunsoo (?). Be sure to have fruit as dessert. the concord grapes are a favorite. You can also serve Korean melons or asian pears. Show off your peeling skills! =)
I chose these dishes because I think they’re easy to make. Oh yah – make some boreecha mool too if you can. Hope this helps. If you’re looking for more ideas or something different, feel free to ask. Good luck!

Wow. Improving the relationship between a woman and her Korean mother-in-law. How powerful is that? At first I thought the wife was a white girl, but then I realized no blog is that powerful.

I LOVE UR SITE!!
its like food everywhere
your site is awesome! i’m always daunted when it comes to cooking, especially korean food because of the lack of specific measurements in the recipes. your site will come in handy!!!
I have a white girl friend who loves to cook and has always been frustrated with me that I can’t teach her to cook Korean (I don’t cook anything, much less food from the motherland). I directed her to your site last night and its…going to change her life. No lie. You rule!
whenever I am hungry, I’ll just come to this site and stare at all the food. lol
mmmmm beef. Sushi?? hehe. that isn’t korean, but i guess most restaurants in the boston area are a mix. korean/japanese made by a chinese person. hehe. living in japan. i am kind of sick of sushi. it is not really special here, but yaki-niku(korean-bbq) is always a special treat for me. mmmmm meat!!!!
you have made the world a much better, tastier place!
I was looking for a recipe for galbi jjim and when I googled “galbi jjim” it brought me here. The best site I’ve discovered in a long time. I love it and the way you write out the Korean words, makes it so easy to follow and understand. Thanks a bunch!
I LOVE THIS BLOG!~!!
