  • Musubi Maker

Now I know that there’s such a thing as a musubi maker, but my ghetto method of using a spam can has been working just fine.  Every time I make spam musubis, there’s never any left.  We love spam!!!!  But since they are a little time consuming to make, I decided to do a little research on musubi makers.

Amebouzu featured this spam musubi maker on his blog, but his blog is in Japanese.  (And he lives in Hawaii – where I first discovered the glorious musubi many years ago.)  You can buy a single musubi maker for $5.25 for a single and $7.50 for a double plus $10.00 s&h on Aloha2go.

This site discusses the history of spam.  They used egg with spam - such a good idea.  Why didn’t I think of that?!  Genius!!!! I’m definitely doing this next time.

And finally JustJenndesigns shows us just how to use the musubi makers.

I gotta get me one of these.  I’m up working and I’m hungry.  Man I would kill for some spam musubis right about now…

  • My choir used to sell spam musubi during food festivals and we used musubi makers and sushi bamboo. Both are easy and the sushi bamboo is really easy to use as well. How do you use the spam can to make it though??

  • Oh yea, and what I originally wanted to say was that I would kill for white rice since my house only uses brown rice nowadays because it is more healthy.

  • that’s ingenious :)

  • that looks yummy~ ;o)

  • how do you make musubi w/ a spam can?? please demonstrate! I LOVE spam musubi…it’s one of my favorite foods. thanks for posting this!

  • you know…I’m not really one for spam (I know I know…so not korean of me, but hey, I’m only half!), but that looks pretty darn good!

  • what next? an automatic musubi maker?! :D

  • they sell this stuff at all convenience stores in taiwan…..microwavable….i LOVE IT…
pepper chicken, katsu, yakiniku beef, egg/ham like above
    man..i miss it.

  • i remember when i lived in maui they used to sell this everywhere.. places like gas stations!  so weird.. haha.

  • that’s great!

    happy holidays.

  • wow i want one.

  • so a spam musubi is just spam gimbap?

  • you could find a spam musubi maker in the asian market.

  • is that like the korean version of the spamburger?

  • bamn on st. marks sells musubi at all hours of the night (in case you didn’t already know).

  • processed meat… good luck working that off your hips

  • HOLY crap, my hawaiin buddy JUST showed me this. ahahahhaha

  • I’ve never had musubi before and i’m not a spam fan, but you’re making me want one too!

  • i didn’t even know spam was actually meat until two months ago when i saw ming tsai cook spam fried rice on his show. he gave some brief spam history. i just thought spam was a totally fake manufactured product. my gf and i have spam and eggs with congee all the time.

  • i tried making this with spam, egg and kimchi… *droOl* it’s the best with the Swheen (fermented) kimchi

  • the double spam musubi maker is the best b/c it saves so much time. i made a grip load for a party once and saved so much time.

  • hm, im’ a bit of a purist…. no egg, no teriyaki sauce, just the right balance of rice and spam. too much rice, it’s bland, too much spam…it’s salty/overpowering….

yup yup. spam and rice, with a tiny bit of algae to bind it together.

  • i LOVE spam musubi…omg..yum

  • spam musubi is my all time i-could-eat-it-everyday-if-it-was-good-for-you favorite food.  i’m a pro at making them too!  4 cups (prewashed) rice, 1/2 package of nori & 1 can of spam (10 slices) makes 10 bricks that i cut into 4 for parties to make 40 squares!

have you tried the garlic or hot & spicy spam?  the garlic is just ok but the the hot & spicy ROCKS!!! oh and you can get those musubi makers for pretty cheap at marukai if you’re ever in southern california (or hawaii!)

  • that’s how they get that perfect rectangular shape.  Mmm…

  • my parents have one and my dad loves making humungo wraps. it cracks me up.

  • now i’m craving some spam musubi! a place i went to in southern california had dipped the spam musubi in tempura batter and then fried the whole thing. suprisingly, it was pretty good!

  • spam is my friend~ =)

  • lol…i generally put fried/scrambled egg in mine, but the maker is kinda useless. most of us hand-form the thing.

  • oh, and yea, i have one of them makers sitting in a drawer. they actually take longer to use…

  • Easy way to make a bunch: Pile the rice onto a cookie sheet. Use your hands to pat down and form a giant block of rice as thick as you want. Lay the spam on top. Cut using a knife into individual musubis. Wrap with nori then with plastic wrap. Tap each of the sides of the wrapped musubi firmly on the counter. It’ll finish packing down the rice and shape it nicely as if you had used a mold.

  • my fiance and i went to a hawaiian restaurant tonight and musubis were on the menu…

    what’s a musubi? i asked..

you didnt read koreancooking’s blog on musubis? he said..

then he proceeded with the explanation..

the restaurant didnt fry it up to where it was crisp and golden… they were ok, but i thought to myself.. i can do it better..

thanks for the suggestions! i will try marinating before cooking! great idea!
