I just got off the phone with my mom, and she wants me to email her a menu of Mr. Bee’s favorite foods because we’re going home to visit next week. Now that I’m married, there’s no more love for me, only Mr. Bee.

Besides homecooking galore, the things I always eat when I’m visiting LA are dungeness crab, carne asada tacos, and In ‘n Out. It is so hard to live without real Mexican food in New York I tell you. It’s definitely my favorite cuisine after Korean. While gourmet food in New York can’t be beat, I think LA has the best ethnic food anywhere. And I’m an ethnic food kind of gal.
As for good old homecooking, everything my mom makes is delicious to me. What I like best is that she makes things super duper spicy for me even though she doesn’t like food super spicy. Thinking about her sweat-inducing ojinguh bokkeum and bibim gooksoo is making my mouth water… I’m dieting right now in anticipation of the impending gorge fest.

What are your favorite homecooked dishes?

my favorite is good old kimchi jjigae. all my mom’s jjigaes actually. and she makes the best potato/fruit salad that only comes out on thanksgiving. yum bibim gooksoo! oh and soondeh and gimbap. ddukbokki. gomtang. there are so many to choose from!
that’s sweet of your mom to think of your husband.. a menu?! haha. my fav food of my mom’s is kimchi jjigae! yumyum.
let me see! im filipino. my mom makes awesome lumpia!!!!! yummmmm have u ever tried it before? its like a meatroll, and my mom puts pork in it and its mixed with carrots and onions, and salt and pepper i think. and its put in wrap thingy. lol
i love my moms, kong nah mul bap, simple kooksoh with basic broth and good lord her kimchee. people in sf die over her kimchee, all fighting each other for a jar. ahhahahahhaa
soojaebi, kong na mul gook, mi yuk gook
My aunt makes these vegetarian dumplings that are sooooooo delicious. I truly think it’s the time and energy that is taken to make the dough and essemble all those dumplings that makes her dish taste so good.
fresh made mandoo
i think there are a number of authentic mexican places throughout the city, but their type of food is less the baja-california style that all my CA friends love and claim to be the sole authentic mexican. now, they may be true by asserting it may be the best region of mexicano eats, but i dunno.
the best authentic places in this city of ours seems to me to always hide in tiny places or in the backs of tiny bodegas… where you see a group of mexican ajumah’s cookin’. reminds me of korean halmuni’s doin’ their cookin’.
what? no mexican food?!!!
you have to leave manhattan for that. i know jackson heights has a huuuge mexican population, and i see tons of spanish restaurants all around there. honestly i think that if you’re looking for real authentic ethnic food, most of the time you ahve to leave manhattan anyway. because not many of us po immigrants can afford to freaking live there!
LA, OC, & SD have amazing Mexican food. I need to cutback, I have it at least twice a week.
my mother in law makes a mean spicy chicken dish that tastes like this but 100x better. http://offthebroiler.wordpress.com/2006/11/09/nj-dining-boom-boom-chicken/
i think you have the same kind of taste as me.
maybe it’s an LA thing.
i love my mom’s naeng myun… her family’s from the north so the naeng myun is authentic…
I love my mom’s kimchee, I hate buying the kimchee from the stores ’cause it never tastes as good. But I love all my mom’s cooking: bibim and mool naengmyun, yugaejang, jajangmyun, and kind of jigae, galbi, bulgogi…yummy!
lol…anything i can’t get, i make. heck, i make most things, anyway. lol.
I love my grandma’s pound cake. deeeelicious…
that’s easy bee … when you send your list of food … just list everything you like and include a couple of mr bee’s favorites … haha
kimchee anything!
do u have a recipe for kimch jun gol or mee yuk gook?
o i c miyuk gook nevermind
mental note: jackson heights = mexican food. aww… how horribly far… >.<

Mochi, baby!
you should visit “lala’s” in hollywood next time you visit.

hehehe.. Mr. Bee gets all the love! Just like last time you guys were in town! (or was it several times before that? I don’t remember!)
Yay! You’re coming home though! Yay! Hey, I wanna talk to you about your tech. school. The one with telecom. Gimme a call when you’re free, yeah?
nothing beats good, real ethnic food. i have no idea what i truly like to eat but i definitely would like to taste a fresh and fulfilling vegetarian meal. that would be interesting and awesome! haha it’d be a good diet too. =D
start posting some korean-mexican fusion dishes
u know…like kimchi empanadas….(the kimchi potstickers are awesome)
stuff like that
i can eat bun bo hue anyday
my dad’s denjangjjigae and his kimchi jjigae. my mom’s kimbab and kalbijjeem. i’m drooling as i’m typing!
Home made egg rolls
Where do you enjoy dungeness crab in LA?
ever wonder if you’ve been good enough to get to heaven?
i love the food in la! do you eat crab at redondo pier? i’m sure you’ve been…but if you haven’t~ you should totally go! the korean seafood place is one of my favorite restaurants.
my mom is the same way when it comes to cooking~ now it’s all about andy’s fave foods! that’s so cool your mom e-mails! so technologically advanced for an ajoomah. as for homecooked dishes~ i love anything my mom makes but esp. plain ol’ kimchee bokeumbap, eun dae goo jorim and galbee jeem.
taco stands in LA are the best. gosh.
i love my mom’s gye-jahng, both spicy and the soy sauce ones. you can easily eat 2 bowls of rice with that. yummers!!
My mom makes kick-ass kimchee chi-gae.
For ethnic food, Toronto is awesome. Because this city is so multi-cultural, you get authentic ethnic food everywhere from Chinese, Jamaican, Korean, Indian, Greek, etc….I have to say that the food in Toronto is the best part about the city.
woo…this is a hard one. my mom makes the best egg rolls!
LA does have the best ethnic food hands down. i’m totally craving carne asada today. i think it’s time to hit the taco trucks tonight!
One of my favorite Mexican places IN MANHATTAN is on 104 and Lex. When I lived in Spanish Harlem, about 4 years ago, it was undiscovered. Then Zagat rated it and it go way more crowded, whiter, and a little pricier, but even my LA friends think its as good as Cali. It’s called El Paso. El Barrio is getting yuppified, so go while there’s still a Spanish Harlem.
being from the la area, i feel you on the in ‘n out. when i head back its all about catching up on great mexican food, since its so hard to find in the dc area. have a great trip.
my mom does’nt like to cook so i do some of your recipes sometimes for the family. we can find gochoojang, jja-jjang and so up to here in lille (france)!
even if she doesn’t often make good dishes, the best of the best is her carbonade flamande : beef in a beer-gingerbread sauce
have you ever had texmex? true, “dirty south” mexican food?? it’s unbeatable!!
i agree, it’s hard to find good mexican food in manhattan. i don’t like going crosstown to the west side, but when i’m craving mexican food, i go to Pio Maya on 8th st (5th ave). so far, it’s the best mexican food i’ve had in manhattan.
are you the same bee from the wedding bee?
gosh everytime i come to your xanga, my mouth starts to water! lolz.. well since i’m laotian, my favorite home cooked meal is fried chicken wings with sticky rice and spicy papaya salad. my bf is korean and one of his favorite home cooked meals that he’s passed on to me is bacon lettuce wraps. just like bulgogi but use bacon instead.. soo yummy and crispy!!
i’d have to say chinese is my fav. cooking after korean. then mebbe italian. on a good day, mexican.
It’s sweet to hear that Mr Bee is so loved by your mother =) I love homecooked dishes but they’re mostly Taiwanese dishes =P And I personally cook tons of pastas… so for Korean dishes, my faves are kalbi, kimchi pancakes and kimchi fried rice =) Well… that’s pretty much the only dishes I can cook besides kimchi jigae . lol. Does baking count?
The bf has become my mom’s new fave too. She caters to his food wants more than mine. Sigh… but everything she makes is good, so it’s ok.
I hope you don’t mind, I looked over every page of the blog. I’m trying to learn a new recipe a week, so I was looking around for some tasty ones.
