I promise to post a recipe later today! =)
But meanwhile… I’ve been craving gahm aka persimmon. Is persimmon a purely Asian fruit? I remember going to a dinner party once in college and one of the Chinese guests brought the host a box of persimmons. She had never heard of them before!
Anyway… what type of gahm do you like best?
The hard ones you have to peel.
The soft ones where you can just peel the skin off with your fingers.
Or the dried ones?

i’ve only had the hard ones.
i’m not really interested in the dry persimmons,
and i’ve never actually tried the soft ones.
… i love soft foods.
dried… ::drools::
my mom is big on gahm. that’s the only fruit she would eat. i used to love the soft ones when i was little, but now i like hard ones. don’t know why! it’s really hard to find good dried ones in the US though. my ex-boyfriend brought a big box back from korea for my mom once and that was pretty awesome. i hear they give you constipation though. :p
I like the firm ones the best. The soft ones are like baby food =)
I like the really smushy ones… And the hard ones. It’s like comparing apples and oranges! One of my college roommates parents’ had a gahm tree so we would always have bags and bags of them ni the fridge. mmmmm. Now I’m craving them too.
i’m a fan of the soft ones and the little jelly like innards about the shape of a ruby.
UR BACK!!!!!!! I MISSED YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!
the soft ones are the best.
the soft ones with a little crunch to the middle. so hungry now…
i like the hard ones better. my mom would do anything for persimmons, especially the big soft ones. they’re like scooby snacks to her. when she was a little girl she would eat it all day, have one before bed, then get up and eat another one first thing. so whenever it’s gahm season we always have it at home. lol. i love the dried ones too.
i think the soft ones are a bit sweeter than the hard ones so i always go for the soft ones~
i like em both!
the hard and dried ones. mmm..
hard ones~~ mmm.. i feel too much like a grandma if i eat the soft ones.. ^^
definitely the soft ones! oh they’re so good…
YuMMie! the SOFT ones!
i like to dig into the soft ones with a spoon. yumm!
i like the hard and soft ones but not really into the dried ones. freshdirect has them sometimes but you can eat them like an apple, skin and all!
I’ve had all three before but I prefer the hard ones.
i like the hard ones…some people don’t like them cuz they say they smell. hahaha
like my brother, the soft ones.. so yummy.. except they leave a dry feeling in the back of your throat..
omg, i love them all!!!
i like the hard ones!
hard. the soft ones are like snot are involve too much slurping.
I love them all. But I love eat gahm when its really ripe and cold during the summer. So ripe that all you need to do is make a small incision and suck all the yummy fruit inside. Aren’t there 2 different types of gahm?
Hard because if you eat the soft ones when they are not quite ripe- they make your tongue feel yucky.
all of them above but the soft ones are my favorite!
i like either the hard ones or the soft ones… but not the dried ones
oooh. definitely the soft ones…
i grew up eating the hard ones and we have one in our back yard. i tried the soft one and the texture reminds me of the rotten ones that fall off the tree. not a fan of the dried ones.
soft ones… hard ones are nice too though…
hard ones. better texture.
hmm.. this is sounding a little sexual.
first one
yum!
I think you can eat the skin of fuyu persimmons – kinda thick, but not impossible. I
fuyu persimmons. I hate Hachiya persimmons – so squishy. I guess I have a phobia about them since my 98 yo grandma loves em – squishy elderly ppl fruit.
Hard and soft, I’ve never tried dried.
Yuck! I don’t like persimmons at all! My dad, mom, and brother LOVE them! So, I have the job of peeling a bunch of persimmons when they want to eat it.
i love those!! i use to jst sit there wash them and bite right into it…skin n all!
firm ones FTW!
definitely the soft ones.
melts in your mouth, not in your hand..
the gummy kind are ok too.
i like the in between ones… but more on the riper side
although i do love the chewy seeds when the gahm becomes mushee…
Yes, my favorite fruit of the season. I like the hard ones best b/c they’re crunchy at first, but the are so juicy when you bite into them.
I like all! I even make the soo jeung hwa…persimmon drink.
the soft ones are called ‘hong shee’ and i prefer those too. i go gaga over them when they’re available. you store them in the freezer to make it last longer and you defrost ‘em in room temperature. once it softens, you eat it with a spoon. it’s sort of like sherbert and it’s to die for.
I love the super soft ones, where you open them and suck all the insides out with your mouth. Mmm…makes me want one right now!
I like the first one and the dried ones. To bad fresh ones are only sold during fall. I have like 2 trees in my back yard! And when they’re not ripe..they make your tongue feel hairy. Thats what happen when i eat the second one.
The dried ones, i can only find during the lunar new year. -__- but sometimes, there not riped when they dry..so they make my tongue feel hair too. To bad i’m allergic to the dried ones. haha.
never had them… i should try it one of these days…
i love the hard ones!!
i just had them last night..
i don’t like it when it’s too mushy.
the soft ones are so succulent. hard ones are good, too. mmmmmmmmmm…..!!!
The soft ones. I think it’s partly because I remember the way my grandmother used to put them into a bowl for me, pierce the soft skin with a small spoon, and then feed it to me. They leave this strange sort of tanginess after you swallow it down, but the meat itself is very sweet and juicy. Yum!
woohoo!! You just taught me the korean term for persimmon!
Actually, I’m obssessed with persimmons. Most people are only familiar with two types, fuyu – the hard, squat ones, and hachiya – the custardy, teardrop-shaped soft one. In reality, there are a handful more with interesting nuances. Like the black persimmon found in Mexico.
Persimmons are actually a native American food.. not Native-American, but native to the Americas.
A small town in Indiana, virtually void of mass transit, hosts a Persimmon Festival where they have an annual persimmon pudding contest. I’d like to go, but it’s quite a trip and rather costly for a festival made up of roughly 20 people. haha.
Aloha!
I am shocked at the site of Korean Persimmons! I need to order me a case! ! ! Help a braddah out i will trade you for hand picked Kula Fujiwara Persimmons. Those ladies loves me they are all in their 60s so they always give me extra fruits to share with evryone…
LMK if we can trade or something that shit is GOOD!
A hui hou
both…i love them both…
i’m a softie!
love the soft ones
I’ve worked at an italian grocery store before, and persimmons were quite popular with the Italians.
they make itchy
i love love love the soft ones.
Definitely the soft, squishy ones.
hi,
i just wanted to let you know that this xanga/blog is really great!
Keep up the good work!!!
the hardies are the bestest!!!
I like the site, May have to try the recipe, but my wife may have something to say about that lol.
I’ve only had the soft ones, in my memory. Love ‘em.
Usually, I eat them a bit firm. I think they grow in the Southern states as well, but I’m not completely sure they’re native.
They are slimy, but delicious.
definitely soft ones~!
they do have ones from israel, a little more orange and smaller than the ones asians are used to.
i like the ggot-gahm. esp when they are inside soojung-gwa. i’ve seen my dad and uncle freeze the really soft/over-ripe ones and eat them like popsicles or ice cream — that’s supposed to be really good.
I like the hard ones the best. While the soft ones are good, they sometimes have a more astringent aftertaste to them…especially if they’re not completely ripe (almost overripe).
