Ghetto Korean Ho Bbang
Ingredients:
frozen white dinner rolls (Rhodes, or whatever brand)
brown sugar
chopped pecans
oil, preferably not olive oil
Directions:
1. Wrap however many frozen dinner rolls in plastic wrap on a plate and heat in microwave until it gets a little mushy, that is workable to flatten out with hands. Don’t overheat b/c it gets stickier to work with. It’s about 10 seconds for one roll and then add a few more seconds for each additional roll.
2. Flatten out the roll with your fingers, just to make it into a flatter, wider circle.
3. Add about 1-2 teaspoons of brown sugar & chopped pecans in the middle of the roll, and pinch the edges from one side to the other to enclose the sugar and pecans, kinda like jeen-bang. Make sure it is enclosed and pinched well. Don’t overload the pecans or sugar or the bread thins out and bleeds out when pan-fried.
4. Heat pan on medium heat. Add a generous amount of oil to coat the bottom of the frying pan.
5. Place the ho-bangs on the pan and flatten down with fingers. Flip when one side is nicely browned.
6. The brown sugar will melt in the inside into a nice gooey juice, and the bread fries into a chewy outside.

I LOVE YOU!!!
this is awesome. i actually have a recipe for “ghetto” korean doughnuts… you know, the twisted ones coated in cinnamon sugar… using frozen grocery store brand bread dough. you just roll each piece of dough (meant to make one loaf) into a long thin (maybe 1 inch thick) rod. then take each end and twist it and it will eventually twist into itself (kind of fold in half, then twist the 2 twisted ends) and pinch the ends together. drop that into some hot oil in a wok or a deep fryer and fry until golden brown. immediately drop and roll in cinnamon and sugar mixture. it’s just as good (even better) than the ones you buy at the korean bakeries!
I definitely gonna make that.
Hey, if I gotta a recipe, how do I get it posted?
yum, my mouth is watering!
yum!! i can’t wait to try it. =P i love ho bbang.
hahah i love how you called it “ghetto” ho-bbang
This is very good! If you add a little nutella inside its good too.
maybe add 2 tsp. of paht…(the ones in the can…since it’s already cooked and sweetened)…. mmm….
Hahaha, ho-bbang, hahahahaha…
I think “bpahng” is closer to (what I’m going to assume as it’s etymology) “pain” in French.
i love the name! =) it sounds easy to make too~!
Hehe I need to get the ingredients
oooh! Thank you so much! I’ve been wanting to know how to make these myself! I go back to Canada in a few months and I know I’m going to crave them like crazy!
i use pillsbury ready made biscuit dough. try brown sugar and sesame seed for the filling. they’re very yummy.
i almost read that as ghetto korean ho bag.
are frozen white dinner rolls the same as the refrigerated biscuits? like buttermilk biscuits that come in those cardboard cylinders? or is it something from the freezer section?
funny name!
To PnutButterNjelly, the frozen white dinner rolls are not the same as refrigerated biscuits. They are found in a plastic bag in the freezer section…they look like balls of frozen dough. I haven’t tried this recipe with pillsbury refrigerated biscuits, but it sounds like imhkim has, and it looks like it might work too. I don’t know…try it and let us know!
trader joe’s has good ready made dough – wheat is a healthy substitute and also tasty! =)
thanks haminesther for the clarification… that could have been disastrous.
i’ll go look in the freezer aisle today.
There’s no doubt, the guy is completely right.
