  • With temperatures rising and summer just around the corner, we have to talk about my favorite dessert – PAHT BING SOO

    ice

Nothing cools you off better on a hot summer day.  Growing up we had an ice shaver with a manual handle – kinda like the one below but it was red and prolly more ghetto.  I bet my mom still has it at home.

A xangan recommended this electric ice shaver so I’m buying it right after I move so I can make all the paht bing soo my heart desires.

If you’re ever in Korea, you have to get yourself an ice berry.  This is the one in COEX but they have locations all throughout Seoul.  So freaking good.  Shaved ice, frozen yogurt, your choice of fruits.  I loved it so much I wanted to open a store here in the States.  It’s healthy and delicious – I bet Americans would love it.  But I already have too many ongoing projects.  Someone open an iceberry!

I found this picture online for pahtbingsoo ingredients.

I do have a confession to make – I don’t really like paht in my pahtbingsoo.  Am I a freak?  I like to make it without the paht and I looooooove the jellies but I’ve only had them at Chinese bingsoo places.  I haven’t seen the jellies at Korean markets but then again I haven’t really looked.

    Ingredients:

    Shaved ice
    Can of Paht
Fruit Cocktail or assorted fresh fruit
    Condensed Milk
    Ice Cream or frozen yogurt

    Optional:

    Dduk (rice cake)
    Jellies

    Directions:

Place paht into a bowl.  Add shaved ice.  Pour condensed milk over ice.  Add ice cream.  Then add fruits, dduk and jellies.  Devour.

PS – Many years ago I was hungover and a repairman came over to my house.  He told me his cure for hangovers was shaved ice, milk, and vanilla ice cream – sounds pretty much like pahtbingsoo.  I haven’t had it in a long time but it is a great hangover treat!

  • Is this the same as the Taiwanese shaved ice? (chua bing)? That stuff is soooo good!

  • they call it halo halo in the phillipines, keke

btw.. there used to be a “cafe iceberry” that was different in shinchon.. i liked their gelato, but it closed and now it’s an omutomato(omrice place) now.. =(

anyway.. keep up the good work!  ^_^

  • omg that first picture looks so freaking yummy.

  • so good. thanks for the pics.

  • Binsoo, raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawr!

I went to this dessert cafe place, their shaved ice REFUSES to melt, it’s sooooo freaking awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Imagine me as a little kid, practically breaking his arm spinning the manual ice shaver ’round and ’round. One time I kinda lost control and the lid came off and cut me. Ours was red too and sits in a dusty cardboard box back at home.

  • oh yum! perfect for summer

  • the pahtbingsoo at pariko on 32nd is REALLY good. lots of fresh fruit and mounds of super soft dduk… mmmm

  • yum now i’m craving one!!

  • omg bingsoo is one of my favorite things in the world

  • yummy… i used to go to dalgi bingsu in korea…

  • yeah..forget american version ..snow cone is so plain. i can’t go back to regular bing soo..i luv mine with everything esp. green tea ice cream

  • A long time ago, we had some at a small place in flushing.  I wonder if it’s still there?

  • if youre in korea..and you like yogurt flavored stuff.. u should definitely check out Red Mango or Pearl Berry!!!  its just like paht bingsoo, but the ice cream is yogurt flavored.  yummm~!    theres usually all sorts of toppings.  enjoy!!  personally, i like pearl berry better, bc its cheaper and they give you more for your money.

  • i don’t like the phat either. and that ice berry sounds delicious!!!

  • YUMMM. I can’t wait to get some patbingsoo at Ice Kiss when I go back home to LA! (speaking of which, you should add “cereal like fruity pebbles” to the Optional list! hehehe)

  • oh yummy!! FYI there is a great Chinese shaved ice place ( with like 30 different jellies and fruits) in L.A at a fast food place called Xiao Mei on Valley and San Gabriel Blvd…there’s always a line in the summer and it’s open until really late..

  • what’s phat? is it red bean?

  • I don’t really like paht in my pahtbingsoo as well… it’s all about fruit bing soo! yum~ ;o)

  • i had bing soo for the first time last year and i think i like taiwanese shaved ice better.. bing soo is too sweet

  • paht is the reason I don’t like paht bingsoo much and most places can’t make it taste very good without :T I will have to try making it at home :) it tastes really good with melon ice cream though (when you can find it:))

  • i dont kno about u, but seoul milk tastes wayy better than american milk… i wonder why? hmm…

  • One thing you MUST add that adds so much flavor is Mee seu ga ru? How do you spell it in English? It’s like a brown powder, I believe roasted corn powder?? I forget, but sprinkle it on top of everything and gives it a richer flavor…yum yum!!

  • it’s not called iceberry, but there’s a pinkberry here in la. when i went to korea, i was obsessed with red mango and pearlberry and i was so sad to leave it behind when i came back to la but they had one here!! same frozen yogurt (it’s kinda hard to explain to people who don’t know what it is, because it’s not like regular vanilla flavored frozen yogurt…) and fruit, nut, cereal toppings!! i go there at least twice  a week. it’s SO good. when you visit la, you should definitely check it out! it’s in west hollywood on santa monica blvd a few blocks west of la cienega. they’re opening one in ktown too on 6th and berendo.

  • oh god i want to eat one NOW.  i need to find one up here!

  • Yeah…the paht is just old school stuff that Koreans used to add for sweetness when fruits were really expensive and fruity pebbles didn’t exist. I could go for some gwahil bingsoo – no paht.

  • Oh wow, that looks good! I don’t think I’m willing to buy that ice shaver though. lol

  • it’s all about the paht..

  • i’m not too big on the paht, i love the duk more…

  • I think the jelly stuff you’re talking about may be almond jello.  It’s easy to make from a mix.  It’s yummers in shaved ice and in some teas (like from Relaxtation in the Westside).   Dduk totally kicks ass in bingsoo.

  • Man….I have a major craving for a paht bing soo now!!!  I wonder if I can find those jellies at our ghetto korean market here in Norcal. :-

  • ahaha. i love that. xD

eat it on a hot summer day. yum.

  • my bf and i were looking for baht bing soo the other day…unfortunately the korean bakeries in flushing didn’t set up their machines yet…but i think i’ll just get that ice shaker and make it at home now!

  • dduks are the best :D

  • Wow, seeing that yummy pic makes me feel so deprived now.

  • shaved ice with bubble jelly? i never thought of that!

  • omg i LOVE patbingsoo.  i have it like every weekend in the summer time.

  • what do you dduk is optional?!! it’s the best part!

  • i had some bing soo today, it was great!! :D

i introduced my friends to it, and they all love it.

  • I had this when I was in Houston. My friend recommended it, it was my first time and it was so yummm!

  • Mmm, looks so good.
It really reminds me of halo halo.
Haha, my family still has one of the manual ice shavers, but it’s pink.

  • Did someone mention PAHT BING SOO…?!!@!@*!&^!&@

  • Oh yum! Haha, well I always get my bingsoo at one of those Korean bakeries like Shilla, but I don’t get the paht bingsoo, I loveeee the fruit bingsoo! It doesn’t have paht in it at all, either!

  • haven’t had this for awhile… mmm yummy!!

  • luv your site and darnit!  now I CRAVE CRAVE CRAVE a paht bing soo!!!!

  • omg, you don’t like paht? that’s the best part! too bad… ;)

  • i love paht bing soo!  Thank you!

  • OMG
    I LUV THAT STUFF!!
the ones in pusan are good

  • I’ve never tried any shaved ice whatever before. I think I’m a bit behind in this category. Haha.

  • yum looks awesome! you should start your own business…

    sage

  • Ooh yum~ I love patbinsoo w/o the beans too =P. Making it is too much work so I just go to a Korean bakery and order an oversized serving. If you like patbinsoo, you should try the Vietnamese jelly drinks. It’s a bit heavier and not as refreshing but hits the spot sometimes.

  • thank you so much for coming by my page to let me know … that’s awesome .. i’m living in Germany right now because my husband’s inn the military … i’ve been cravin korean food .. i’ll be coming by often!

  • i love paht bing soo. koryodang cafe in manhattan’s k-town in nyc has a great bing soo and you can choose the ice cream flavor too. i prefer the green tea ice cream bing soo.

  • gah~ I got kicked out of an iceberry one time.
My friends were being so obnoxious and spilled the 12000 won (biggest bowl) all over the floor.
So embarrasing.  They told us to leave.

    But yeah, awesome stuff

  • i’m going to try making this..sounds so good!

  • i love al these thing also I live in korea

  • Hahaha of course. Gotta have the dduck (:

  • Can’t miss the boba.
    I live in Koreatown.
    I rock.
