  • Mr. Bee and I moved this past weekend and I’d packed all our kitchen stuff awhile back so I hadn’t had any Korean food in a week!  I was literally going to shrivel up and die.  So we went to Kun Jip last night and ordered the ojinguh bokkeum and jo-gee (yellow croaker)/dwenjang jjigae combo.

    4pm 163 4pm 164 4pm 165 4pm 166

It was the dinner rush so the place was packed like usual.  When the host took my order, I asked him to make the ojinguh bokkeum super duper spicy.  He looked at me incredulously and said, “Spicier?!  But it’s already so spicy!”  Clearly he doesn’t know how spicy I like it.  When it came out, it wasn’t spicy at all!   The ojinugh bokkeum I had once at KumGangSan is actually pretty good - much spicier.  This is why I have to cook at home – no one makes anything spicy enough!  I also don’t like udon noodles so I ask them to replace it with regular gooksoo, but not during the dinner rush because they’re so busy.

It’s hard for me to go 2 days without having any Korean food – I have to have it at least 4 days a week.  I can’t live without it.  Even in college, I lived with my brother and cousin so we cooked Korean food pretty much every night.  My theory is that Korean food is so spicy that it destroys your taste buds and only things with extreme flavors become enjoyable.  My dad says that consuming a lot of alcohol also makes you crave spicier foods.

How often do you need to eat Korean food?

  • oddly i dont really need korean food. and i dont need to eat kimchi with everything. actaully i dont even care if kimchi’s there or not. when i moved out to go to school i hardly ate any korean food during the week but on the weekends i would crave it.

  • since i grew up eating brazilian food i don’t really have the need to eat korean food all the time. i actually prefer not to eat korean food at all. only once in a while when i crave it, which is extremely rare. it’s also hard to eat korean food especially since the bf unit doesn’t seem to like it much. =/

  • i can go a pretty long while without korean food, BUT i will start to hate all foods if i go for too long.  i agree with your theory.  after not eating korean food for like 4 days, every single thing tastes so freaking bland.  too bad i dont cook at home too much anymore.

  • Hrm… my bf and I don’t really crave it, though he LOVES it (um, he’s Korean). I don’t think Korean food is spicy at all. I think it’s just red. So when I ask people if they can eat spicy, and they reply that they’re Korean, I remain expressionless, and repeat, “so, can you eat spicy?”

My family and I grew up eating fresh hot peppers, the tiny super duper spicy ones usually used in Thai. Now when someone responds with, “I’m Thai,” I KNOW they can eat spicy!

  • I love korean food! :)  my mom used to feed us gook and bahp every morning ^^ I didn’t eat it as often since I lived on my own, but now I eat it quite often bc my bf, he has to eat it almost every day… he’ll settle for asian, but he craves korean the most…

  • i can actually go a long time without it. preferably i’d have it about 6 days a week though. the problem is that i live uptown and there are no good korean places here. even the places downtown aren’t very good (being from LA). and i really don’t have time to go to flushing, which i’ve never actually tried.

there are a lot of good soul food places here though. and they use a lot of different spices. nothing’s as good as korean food though. i’m definitely moving back to LA.

  • i used to have to eat korean food every day. but not anymore. ever since i had an ulcer and gastritis, i can’t eat spicy as much. plus, the doc gave me a scare…he sees a lot of korean patients with stomach ulcers. =(

  • i go in cycles. sometimes nothing, then all the freakin time.

  • you lived with your brother and cousin in college? cool.

yeah i usually just cook chicken breast and make some bap.. korean food, college-style.

  • i can’t believe everyone’s answer isn’t everday!! EVERYDAY! :o )

  • I’m not even korean but I have to eat korean food at least 3 times a week. It’s so yummy and spicy! Did you know that chile peppers have the highest Vitamin A and C content than any other fruit or veggie? Crazy but true.

  • hehe. once a month.

  • i used to need it all the time, but i started to ween off because of ulcers and such. my weaksauce american born kyopo body cant take that shit too much. ahhahahhaa i still do, but i pay for it.

lately ive been switching over to “healthy” korean food…. no fun, not like the burn your mouth street duk bok khi on the streets. YEAH I GOING SFO TO ICN next week.

  • korean food is my drug of choice. i can’t go more than a week without it.

  • ever since i’ve been with a korean guy, i crave for korean food daily… and i never liked korean food in the past… i try to have it at least twice a week =) he on the other hand, needs it everyday… that’s why i subscribed to this wonderful site =P

  • i have to eat it EVERY DAY!

  • Once a month is more than enough for me.. but that’s because I’m not Corean. I crave Japanese food the most but I’m not Japanese neither. hehe

  • At least twice a week.  If I don’t have it a whole week, I immediately have really bad withdrawals…

  • it doesnt have to be korean food but i need to eat rice at least once a day.  i need my rice.  i cant believe you actually lasted one week w/o korean food though because i dont think i can do that!

  • within 24 hrs… its like a crazy addiction… if i have 3 american meals in a day… i have to rush home and have bap. and kimchi.

  • great site =) keep it up

  • same as kboy75

  • it depends…i can go without it…and then i’ll start craving something really badly.  i usually have it everyday now though since i cook at home all the time.  =)

  • 3x a week..i’m not Korean but my hubby is …he’s gotten me addicted!

  • probably twice a month?

  • i need korean food once every few months.  [i'm obviously not korean] haha….but i do crave for it.  i passed by kun jip on friday night and there were tons of people waiting!

  • it doesn’t matter whether i eat rice or not, as long as i get some kimchi once a day. =) I’m so used to eating a Korean dinner every single night, I don’t know how I’m going to survive when I go off to college this upcoming school year.

  • at least once every three days or i get INCREDIBLY irritable

  • pretty much every day… gosh, hot spicy ojinugh bokkeum sounds good. maybe i’ll cook some up for dinner tonight~ ;o)

  • Hmm…I’ve never thought about actually not eating it…but I guess a couple times a week is good for me, even if it’s just a simple bowl of rice, kimchi, cut up seaweed (the dried, sesame oiled kind, what’s it called lavar-something?), fried egg and soysauce to round it off.

I hate it when resturants make dishes “unspicier” lol, when you specificially ask for it spicier!

  • mmm, that looks so yummy …

  • yummi..
i <3 the korean bbq stuff

  • you’re so cute! i think it’s true, if you keep having korean food, you just crave it and yes, i think i’ve lost taste buds cuz things have to be real spicy for me to go, yes, that’s spicy. now that we have an ajumma, we have korean food every day. but we sometimes get sick of it, so we had cereal for breakfast this morn instead of korean food.

  • pretty much once a day.  doesn’t matter what time of the day it is.

Thanks for the plug once again! traffic was amazing.

  • i often say if i was forced to eat korean food everyday for the rest of my life, i wouldn’t mind.  and then i moved to korea.  its great but sometimes i crave a burrito too.  but your dad is right.  there is nothing better than a bottle of soju with a good buddy chasing it down with a nice spicy jigae, yah?

  • I heart Korean Food so much, I crave kimchi just about everynight.. haha…

  • probably at least 3 times wk… when i eat too much of other kinds of foods, i feel like i’m eating too much ‘junk’.  it’s only when i eat korean that i feel like i’m eating ‘healthy’.  which in fact, it is compared to what’s out there these days!

  • I LOVE KOREAN FOOD!!!!SO YUMMY!!!!>.<

  • im not even korean and i get cravings if i dont have it at least once a week.. hahaha

  • Depends on my “cycle” lol…only when I have my friend do I crave super duper spicy jjigae’s and such but other than that I can go without for a looooong time…whereas my white boy fiance is ALWAYS suggesting we go have Korean whenever it’s his turn to choose a place to go out to lol

  • I hear ya… I must have Korean food, and I too have a craving for ultra-hot food. I like my jaeyook kimchi bokum ultra hot… just smelling it will make you cry.

But even I have a limit… I forgot where, but in Philly, there’s this Thai resturant that makes the hottest dish I’ve ever had… called the “Crying Tiger.” The menu warns… no refunds or substitutions. I was sweating and crying just from smelling it. I think I lost 5 pounds from sweating alone. I tell you, it was like eating fire itself.

  • i LUBBING DA korean pood. but i can go longer than you without it. hahaha

  • Very very frequently!

  • Can I get some recommendations? Haven’t eaten in KTown NYC in a while!

Anyone recommend a place off 32nd Street that has galbi gui (at the table), jjigae (over a fiery sterno), and dol sot bibimbap? I’m taking a group from work, and want to show them a great time!

  • I think your dad is partially right. A lot of alcohol, or specifically beer, has very little sodium so you body will crave salt, and most spicy food is also on the salty side. I think this is why people eat pretzels or salty anjoo with beer. (the low sodium content of beer causing salt craving i learned in medical school. you always remember the wierd stuff.)

  • i love spicy spicy..extra spicy..habenero spicy.. we should do dinner togehter..

  • once a week but my husband needs it 3-4 times a day. When I was a kid never craved it but after going away to college and not having good korean food started to crave it more.
