  • I can’t sleep so I just ate a yookyejang sabalmyun bowl noodle.  I grew up eating this so I love it!  It’s the OG best bowl noodle.

Since I can’t sleep I might as well write a blog about my favorite ramen.  I love, love, love ramen.  I can’t live without it!  I can’t live, if living is without ramen, I can’t live… I can’t live anymore…

Everyone has their own way of cooking ramen.  My dad adds egg, gochujang (red pepper paste), onion, and pa (green onion).  Some like to throw in a sausage.  Or maybe some spam.  I like mine with plain old egg, and the noodles slightly undercooked – there’s nothing worse than overcooked ramen.  I take the pot off the stove when it’s pretty undercooked because the noodles will continue to cook a bit in your bowl.  It’s an art getting that perfect consistency especially when you’re making more than one package.

When I go to the Korean market, the noodles I always buy are shin, samyang, jjapaghetti, and yookyejang bowl noodle.  I like sambaeknyang every now and then but sometimes that can be hard to find.  I like shin ramen cuz it’s spicy.  I like samyang’s taste.  I like jjapaghetti with lots of sambal hot sauce.  In college I used to love ojinguh jjambbong – excellent broth.  But I stopped buying it for some reason… maybe it was the udon noodles.  I don’t like udon.  Which is why I don’t like neoguri either.

I also always have some Maruchan or Nissin noodles in chicken flavor.  I toss in an egg and drench in tabasco.  Yum.  Every now and then I’ll have an Ichiban – original or chicken flavor.  I like to chop up some green onions and put them on top.  The yummiest noodle to eat raw as a snack.

Have you seen this Korean noodle commercial?  I think it was banned from television.  The first time I saw it I immediately knew it was a ramen commercial but I was shocked that they’d make something this explicit in Korea!

  • cant believe you dont like neoguri!  its my absolute favorite.. and yes, theres nothing’s quicker and more satisfying than yookgaejang sabalmyun.

ugh, now im starving and totally want a bowl, but my mouth is still bloody from the recent wisdom teeth extraction.  sorry for TMI!

  • i eat kimchee bowl sabalmyun using just hot tapwater. i like it crunchy.

  • if you mix shin and ichiban original together it tastes pretty good. i love ramen!

  • i tried all the korean ramyuns, but i keep going back to ichiban.

i throw in whatever i can find, and agree on overcooking. it is just too blah.

if u couldn’t sleep, what happens? stay up throughout the next day?

  • i looove korean ramen! can’t live without it! i eat it at lunch all the time but the best time to have it is midnight snack which i can’t afford to do that anymore =P unfortunately i’m the only person that likes my noodles soggy =P i like mine plain with with a beaten egg (just the fact that i have some nutrients instead of all msg) and sometimes some lettuce and seaweed for the same purpose =) it’s not even 9am yet and i’m craving for some korean spicy ramen!

  • I actually like neoguri. The thing with Ramen though… I have to have it consistently. If I don’t have it for a while, the first pack I eat, I’ll feel like I’m dying! It’s just so salty, I feel soooooo dehydrated and feel lightheaded. Yeah, it’s nuts.

Question for you – how do you keep your magazine articles? To prepare for my move, I’m going through my magazines and taking out recipes and articles and tips (I LOOOOOVE Real Simple magazine). I have no good organizing/storage idea. Do you?

  • I am not Korean or any bit Asian so I feel a little like an outisder, I hope you all don’t mind.
    I love Korean food.
I love this site because of the pictures it helps me to sort out what things are. I am blessed to live in one of the major metropolitian cities of this country. SO…….I have access to some amazing import stores and restaraunts. In fact there are at least 5 Korean markets within a 15 min drive. All of them have fresh made food every day. (btw: will someone please tell me the name of the sweet sticky/spicy chicken wings, they are amazing)

Anyway this ramen post made me laugh. I end up in these import stores trying to figure out what flavor of ramen is what.
I read the little stick on lable of ingredients that is required to sell something in the US. SO I have a small clue. Most of the time I bring them home and we sample them. Of course, I can’t read the directions so I make every packet with two cups of water and boil the noodles (yes ramen is not good overcooked) just under 3 mins, then add the seasoning, many times I’ll add egg and green onion, if I have any shrimp around that goes in too.
Ok now here is is where it gets even more humorous.
I can never remember which ones I like so I carry a bunch of empty wrappers in my pocketbook/purse so I can find them again.

  • Yookyejang sabalmyun is so good. <3

  • hoy shi*t i can not believe this is a korean commerical?!

i cant eat ramyun unless i boil the noodles twice, to get all the grease out. it taste much more “kkal keum hae”

i do it with cup ramyun too..

  • if you’re hungry or have someone to share with, put one bag of neoguri and one bag of shin ramen together…it’s amazing!  if you don’t have any friends, neoguri with dduk and mandoo cooked together with an egg and green onion…awesome in the winter.  Ichiban original is probably the best ramen to eat with old kimchi.  man…i could eat that for days.

  • That commercial is funny….

I love the yookyejang sabalmyun and neoguri.  I’m not a huge of fan of the Shin ramen.  I get sick of it really quick.  Any noodles mushy is no good though.  Yuck.

  • the ogs the og for a reason. i love that shit. i buy boxes at a time from costco.

when im in the mood for something a bit different tho, them japanese ramens are pretty damn good too though. but those guys try to sell this particular one i like at about a buck a pop. kinda expensive but still damn good.

  • you know how obsessive i am with ramen. if it wasn’t so bad for you, i’d eat it EVERY DAY!! i will NEVER get sick of ramen! my old college roomate and i love ramen so much when we eat ramen together, we’d make our own in two seperate pots because we liked it different ways. hahahaha. i have to have my noodles semi hard, using less water, and egg poached in the broth (if i use an egg, which would depend on my mood). the secret is waiting until the water starts boiling again after the noodles are placed in the pot, dropping the egg in, then taking the noodles out first.

omg i’m so gonna eat ramen like right now.

  • i have a hard time believing that commercial actually aired in korea…

  • That is one of my all-time favorite commercials, just because it’s so dirty.

  • haha……thinking I wouldn’t understand the commercial I didn’t play it at first…….then I got curious………that is funny.

  • shin ramen with egg and i throw in some curry powder… YUM!

  • hahaha this commercial is great. i like neugori, ichiban, and jjabagetti.

  • yookyejang sabalmyun bowl noodle is the all time BEST!  great entry.

  • that yookyejang bowl is the mother of all korean noodle bowls.  i dont know any korean family who didnt buy a box every now and then.  and omg that korean commercial is crazy!  i can’t believe it.

  • when i first saw it i knew too, but i fooled so many of my friends… hahahhaa…. *maniacal laughter*

  • OmG. that’s a pretty raunch commercial. :P

I heart ramen too. I wish I didn’t feel so guilty after eating it though :OI

  • neoguri… then, ichiban and cha cha roni

  • Used to love it when I was young. Now, I’m too allergic to preserved foods, I cant even eat it without breaking out. :(

  • they have so many lamyun varieties.
i saw a green tea version.
    ?!

  • i like neoguri, and then chapagetti (although i’ve been feeling sick everytime i eat after one)

and that commericial is so tacky!!!!! telling ya koreans are going through some sex revolution or something

  • i love your site by the way SO SMART!

  • jjahpahgetti and ichiban is my favorite! I lub lub la myun :)

  • My favorite: cut up hot dogs and egg with fresh broccoli …yum.

  • for the love of God, pls. try “pama” ramen .. its like a mildy spicy ichiban .. and it has enormous green onions in it .. drooolllinggg.

  • i love shin – forever and forever!  Omg.. THAT’S a ramen commercial??

  • i love all types of ramen~  i dont discriminate!!!  i only wish that ramen were healthier for people..

  • myyyyyyyyyyyyy gosh…what the heck….that commercial nasty….

  • neoguri is my fav too.  yum…i wanna go home and have some now.  ^_^

  • i LOVE ramen too~ My favorite is Shin Ramen but spicer the better! ;op

  • i went out and bought a ramen after reading this… shin and neoguri are best with kimchee and spam.

  • Neoguri is my fav because it doesn’t feel/taste like regular ramen…and I add lots of stuff too: egg, leftover meat, chopped up carrots, green onions, dried seaweed. In fact, I fooled my husband the first time I made it for him because he didn’t think it was actually ramen noodles he was eating and he *hates* ramen noodles.

Ojinguh jjambbong…I’ve got to try this one! And personally I dislike OG best bowl noodle because the testure of the noodle reminds of Cup of Noodles.

  • lol…we used to eat the maruchan/sapporo raw in grade school. i now prefer fresh saimin. tastes much better.

  • ichiban ramyun….so good with spam

  • not a big fan of ramen since there are high levels of Mono Sodium Glutamate with no real nutrtional value in these foods…however when I was a kid the 2nd and 3rd ramen were the best =)

  • JAPAHGHETTI is da bomb. all these new versions like jajang party or jajaroni is so gross. The ‘ghetti with olive oil is always cheh go!

  • hello. i was wondering if any of you new how to make yuk ghae jang.
and thank you so much for this site! it’s great!!

  • grew up with ichiban and took maruchan as the white man’s ramen… which isn’t spelled at all how its pronounced… shin lamyun is badass

  • you should try sutah myun.  there’s an extra gochu garoo packet.  everyone i’ve told about this, likes it.  i like putting onions in mine sometimes.  (along with egg and scallion)

  • you like your ramyun just the way i like mine.
and i love yookgaejang bowl noodle!

  • mmmmmmm………korean food so yummy!

  • yummy. I love spicy ramen with dakgwang.  that commercial is horrible!

  • if you like spicy, you should try sootamyun. it comes with two spice packs, spicy and butt-on-fire spicy. :o )

  • my dad works in a lab… sometimes i go visit and if there’s no one there at night… we make ramen in a flask!

and the taste is amazing. i dont kno why. i agree on the undercooking, overcooked ramen is ick.

  • also they sell “bbuhshyuh bbuhshyuh”. do u kno it? its like… dry, snack ramen. explicitly for snack use.

  • I can see why that commercial was banned…ew.
I love shin noodles, but sometimes i think it’s not spicy enought so i add more. lol I love eating the shin noodles with cheese in them! =] lol

  • haha.. I saw this commercial awhile ago and it is explicit! but hey, sex sells? oh.. and good ramen too.

  • wow.  you know i’ve never had true korean cuisine.  all i’ve had was that sweet beef.  gosh i forget what it’s called which is a shame because i loved pronnouncing it. haha.  that was delicious.

i love your heading…i’ve never seen a table with such edible art.

  • this is a random comment…

    dear god.
    that commercial is so awesome.

  • ‘Shin’ and ‘Ojinguh Jjambbong’ are my favorites…

I try not to eat it often because of MSG…

  • i like shin ramen.. that commercial is very disturbing….

  • I love the korean food :) especially bibimbap? !

  • OMG! i just discovered your site a week ago!! and the recipes look soooo delicious right now!!!
Oh btw i was wondering do u have a recipe for kimchi fried rice? I’m chinese sooo i have no idea, what most of the recipes are on the side.

  • You gotta try Mi Goreng, an Indonesian ramen.  It’s really good and so addictive.

  • love su-tah-myun!  spicy!

  • the only one I like is Shin ramen but I only eat it once a month because its so bad for you. I put an egg and scallions and undercook it but though I’m a pretty good cook, I can’t make ramen like my husband.

  • how do you like your eggs in ramen?  do you put it in raw at the end, let it cook a little in the soup, fry the egg first?  i ususally buy shin ramyun because that’s the only one i can easily recognize (i wish i knew korean– hope i can learn soon!) and because it’s spicy.  do you ever put extra kimchi in your ramen?  mmm, i especially crave a nice bowl of hot, soupy ramen on a cold day!
